To calculate • Boise Cascade recommends these minimum spans for higher qualify deflection limits of [2180, [2240 and U360, multiply the live load by floors. Nonetheless, greater spans can meet building codes and 2.67, 2.0 and 1.33 respectively. satisfy some users. (See page 4 for minimum code - allowed floor • Total load column limits joist deflection to U240. spans.) • Load capacity assumes the absence of composite action from •Several additional factors also affect floor performance. For example, sheathing. glue - nailed floors will perform better than floors secured by nails alone. • Values represent the most restrictive of simple or multiple span Also, deflection of the sheathing material between joists can on applications. reduced by decreasing the joist spacing or using thicker sheathing. • To size a joist for use in a floor, check both live load and total load. • Proper installation is essential for dependable performance. Adequate Where live load is not shown, size according to total load. and level support for the joists is necessary, as is careful fastening of the joists and sheathing. • Some stiff floors with very little dead had may tend to vibrate. How- ever, this generally can be dampened by directly attaching the ceiling • below to the bottom flange of the joists. Where the underside of the floor is unfinished, the vibration can be minimized by nailing a continu- • a ous 2x4 flat perpendicular to the bottom flanges of the joists at midspan and tying off to the end walls. 1 1____ ___1 i'COLORADO STATE ELECTRICAL BOARD INSPECTION REPORT AND CORRECTION NOTICE A Permit // -72 c fq 1 17 , Contractor /H t ,- f .
