Dear Doug: _ _ _ On May 24, 1996 I performed a structural evaluation of the existing barn at the above address and offer the following comments. The evaluation was based on a snow load of 40 psf. Shed ortion of barn • The 2x6 rafters at 24" o.c. are inadequate. They should be 2x8's at 24" o.c. or 2x6's at " o.c. • The ledger which supports the rafters where they attach to the main part of the bam „D( - should be 2- 2x10's instead of 1 -2x10. The ledger attachment to the column (currently U — 4 -16d nails) should be (4) 5/8" diameter lag bolts or through bolts.. • It appeared the rafters were attached to the upper ledger by end - nailing through the back of the ledger into the end grain of the rafters. If this is the case, additional nails should be towed into the side of the rafters as end nailing is not recommended. • The double 2x8 ledger which" supports the rafters on the lower side is sufficient in size but.should also be bolted to the column w/ (4) 5/8" diam. bolts. Additionally, the diagonal 2x6 braces should he lag-bolted to the column wlrh (2) 1/2" diam.taus each side. ` Maiv part of barn • The trusses are pre- engineered and should be stamped by the truss manufacturer. • The (2) 2x10's which support the trusses along the backwall should lie (212x12's, At — the frontwall, the (3) 2x12 headers over the overhead doors should be sistered with (1) 11 7/8" l4icrolam. t/ z j Pit ,. 1 ; / 4. ,, .o , , NV 1 .n C ! ` ':. Adequate and complete information will prevent delays in the plan review process. Reviewing a plan and the discovery that required information has not been provided by the applicant may result in the delay of the permit issuance and in proceeding with building construction. The owner or contractor may be required to provide this information before the plan review may proceed. This causes delays because other plans that are in line for review may be given attention before the new information may be reviewed after it has been provided to the Building Department. Please review this document to determine if you have enough information to design your project and provide adequate information to facilitate a plan review. If you do not, it may be helpful to obtain a book titled "Dwelling construction under the Uniform Building Code. This book is available to you through this department at our cost. Also, please consider using a design professional for assistance in your design and a construction professional for construction of your project.
